The Burberry House, one of the United Kingdoms largest brands
The Burberry House, one of the United Kingdoms largest brands of high end clothing, was founded by Thomas Burberry, who began his fashion career by making weatherproof garments. In 1879, Burberry invented an innovative new fabric called Gabardine, a tightly woven fabric, and patented it eleven years later. Gabardine was originally a waterproof textile used to make outerwear worn by polar explorers. It was soon recognized that Gabardine could serve more ordinary purposes.
Gabardine is typically worsted wool, cotton, polyester, or a blend of the aforementioned fibers. Its most easily recognized by it's prominent diagonal ribbing on the surface and smooth grain on the back. Burberry began using Gabardine to make mens suits, trousers, uniforms, overcoats, and other forms of outerwear, as Gabardine is highly durable, despite being a dry clean only fabric.
By the 1950s, Gabardine was being widely used to fabricate colorfully patterned casual wear, such as jackets, trousers, and suits for both men and women. A particular garment, known as the weekender jacket, is highly sought after even today in current rockabilly subcultures. Gabardine remains an important advancement in fashion and utility textiles, especially for vintage fashion collectors.
Wow! I almost forgot. I have been pondering changing my website. There is something I like about the website https://www.clearviewglobal.com. Not even sure precisely what but needed responses 🙂 Feedback on this would be good. Okay back to it!
Stay tuned in to Valentine & Garuda on Etsy for the upcoming availability of Gabardine garments!
Many thanks should go to Fruitperks who actually gave me the seed idea for this posting in an email they sent to me. Looking at their website they look like a marvelous fresh fruit supplier if anybody's curious.
