The Tools of the Trade
Hair styling tools may cost anywhere from a couple of dollars to several hundred dollars. Price alone doesn't determine quality, so if you're expanding your collection of hair tools, or replacing hair styling tools, read the reviews and compare prices online before laying out your hard earned cash.
A basic kit of hair styling tools generally includes the following: hair dryer, curling iron, hairbrush, flat iron, and combs. Choose wisely, and you can make sure that your hair stays healthy and great looking.
A basic paddle brush or cushion brush is an all-around favorite, with paddle brushes generally better for longer hair, and cushion brushes better for shorter hair. Either type is good for daily brushing, distributing the natural oils of your hair, and getting rid of stray or loose hairs before washing. A wide-tooth comb is often the only kind you need, and is just right for detangling after washing and conditioning your hair.
The more often you use a hair dryer or curling iron, the more important it is to choose a model that will last, and that won't damage your hair. Choose a model that offers several heat and air flow settings, to maximize your styling options. Hair dryers with removable lint filters are best. If you regularly clean the lint filter, you can greatly prolong the life of your hair dryer.
When it comes to flat irons, you're often better off buying the nicest one you can afford. Higher-end models often have features that can minimize damage to your hair, so if you use one regularly, consider investing in a professional flat iron.
